Good questions

Are soft ground boots worth it for UK rugby?

From October to March, yes. Metal studs are the difference between scrummaging and skating on most club pitches.

Can I wear football boots for rugby?

Usually yes, and the common claim that blades are simply banned is wrong. World Rugby's stud specification caps studs at 21mm and prohibits burring and sharp edges, requiring all edges to be smooth and rounded. It does not outlaw non-conical shapes: designs other than the standard conical stud are allowed where they present no greater risk of injury than that standard. The catch is that manufacturers self-certify, and a football boot is not certified for rugby by its maker, so nobody publishes a definitive per-model verdict. Check the stud length, feel for sharp edges, and ask your club or referee if you are unsure.

Full answer, checked against the rules, including whether blades are banned and whether you need metal studs.
